The Book Bit: November 2022 Ed.

I know I always say this, but I have no idea where the month went! November came and went in a whirlwind. I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday and is staying warm. I don't know about where you're living, but here, the weather has really turned cold fast. I'd even settle for snow at this point if it meant it would be a little less frigid. Even though November blew by, I still managed to read a couple of really good books! I think I'm officially out of my reading slump, which is a great relief. This time of year is when I typically do the most reading since we spend a majority of our time indoors. Ok, enough chit chat, let's talk about what I read this month. "Desperate Measures Short Stories" by Katee Robert So, last spring I read "Desperate Measures" by Katee Robert (you can find my review for that here ) and I've been meaning to pick up that series, but haven't managed to do it. I found out that Katee Robert published a book of b

The Book Bit: October 2022 Ed.

Hey all, welcome back to the book bit! I know, I know, I say this every month, but October really just flew by. I feel like I have whiplash. I struggled through my reading in September. So, when October came around I was almost in a reading slump, but October is my favorite reading month! I read only horror books in October! So, despite my near reading slump I loaded up and was really excited. But life really got in the way! We were so busy all month! I can't even tell you what all we did, but every weekend was booked, I had a lot of work I was doing, and of course, we had Halloween. It was just a crazy month. But enough about that, let's talk about the books I read! "Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw Five thriller seeker friends decide to have a wedding in a supposedly haunted mansion in Japan. Sure, it's been a little while since they've all gotten together, but this is sure to bring the group back together. Looking for spooky things together, just li

The Book Bit: September 2022 Ed.

Hey all! So, today's a bit of a weird one because I didn't really love any of the books I read this month 😭 This rarely happens for me and when it does it feels so... oddly personal? Reading one book and not loving it, sure that happens. You just brush it off and move on. But reading three books in a row that you don't really like... that's tough. That's enough to put you in a reading slump. Or make you question if you're the reason the book isn't stellar, not the book itself. It makes you worry that you'll never find a good book again. Or that maybe your favorite genre isn't your favorite anymore. So much doubt! Ugh, I absolutely hate when I have a reading month like September, it really makes my insides feel wonky. But without any further ado, let's get down to the business at hand. The books in question.  "A Girl Like That" by Tanaz Bhathena Sixteen year old Zarin leads an interesting life. She's an orphan, a bright student, and

The Book Bit: August 2022 Ed.

OK, well the summer is gone and the kids are settled into school! Did everyone survive? I always start August thinking I'm prepared for the mayhem that will ensue towards the end of the month, but I always, without fail, underestimate the craziness. And this August was no exception. It was hectic. It was stressful. It was not organized. It was not aesthetically pleasing. But we all made it through. Now to just get through the rest of the school year 😳 I did manage to read four books this month! Let's not talk about the amount of stress reading I did for absolutely no reason, but did anyway! How did you round off your summer reads? Did you read anything fantastic you want to tell me about? Leave me a comment! OK, without any more idle chitchat, let's get started! "Bloodsucker's Blog:Life Sucks" by Ella Stone Merrywen has been seventeen for seven years and isolated in a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. It's for her own good and the good of everyone else,

The Book Bit: July 2022 Ed.

So, July is officially over?! I honestly cannot comprehend where the summer has gone. We're over here getting ready for school now and I'm shocked. What did we do this summer? We went camping. Once. We went to the pool. Once. Ummmm.... that's all I can remember. I mean, surely we did more than that? Surely. I'll remember at some point. What did you do this summer? Something memorable? Or did you have a chill summer at home? It's been really hot here the past month and we've just been trying to stay cool. My water bill is shameful. Did you read any good books over the summer? Let me know in the comments what you've been getting up to. I put away four books this past month and I can't wait to tell you about them. "My Sister, the Serial Killer" by Oyinkan Braithwaite Korede's been helping her younger sister in the most interesting way; helping her hide the bodies of her boyfriends. Three to be exact. But if it's self defense is it really m

The Book Bit: June 2022 Ed.

Hey all! Wow, I know I'm getting this out a bit late, but June was so busy! I can't even remember what we were doing but everyday was filled with something. I feel like I'm just now slowing down into my lazy summer. And, let me tell you, it will be lazy from here on out. I'm going to kick back and relax as much as I can this next month. Do you have any fun summer plans? Or are you taking it easy too? So, I did manage to get some great books read in June, let's talk about them! And if you didn't know, I now have a YouTube channel! You can find that here , it's a channel all about books i.e. what I've read, what I'm thinking about reading, book recommendations, etc. You should check it out! Ok, let's get into these books! "Queens of Themiscyra" by Hannah Lynn Have you ever wondered how the Amazon warrior women loved? We've all heard of Achilles, Theseus, Hercules, but what of the legendary women that destroyed armies within a few hour

The Book Bit: May 2022 Ed.

Goodness, you guys! May is over! I can't believe it. The end of May is always so hectic for us with school wrapping up and the summer beginning. We're always busy at the end of May and then finally summer break! Woo hoo! Do you guys have any fun plans for summer? We're staying put this year and just having a lazy summer. I'm actually looking forward to it! Hopefully I'll get lots of reading done and just enjoy the slower and longer days. Ok, let's not procrastinate! Here are the books I read in May.  "Quantum Entanglement" by S.R. Watson and Ryan Stacks Genesis just wants to finish school and not ruin her newest relationship. But when a series of strange events plagues her, she can't ignore that things are just plain weird right now. And when she freezes an entire coffee shop she doesn't think twice when a stranger tells her she's in danger and needs to escape. Elysian is all about wrestling and getting his girlfriend back. But when he expe

The Book Bit: April 2022 Ed.

I think we might actually be in spring. Finally! Never mind that overnight freeze we had three days ago, let's not talk about it. Everything's blooming, the grass is growing in thick, and the kids are able to play outside without jackets. I'm calling it. And this is absolutely the best time of year to sit outside with a book. I can sit in the sun and be the perfect temperature and love every second of it. I better do it quick before summer sets in though. I don't know where you live, but here... Spring lasts about three seconds before the boiling temperatures flood in. Anyways, lots of outdoors days on the horizon. Let's get into what I read in April. Did you read anything exciting? Drop me a comment and tell me all about it! "That's Not What Happened" by Kody Keplinger When the Virgil County High School Massacre happened three years ago, Sarah died proclaiming her faith. At least, that's what everyone thinks happened. The truth? Sarah's best f

The Book Bit: March 2022 Ed.

Did everyone enjoy their spring break? I got a rare week without all my kiddos and got lots of rest and time to just relax. Did you do anything fun over the break? Did you read any good books last month? I read four books this month and there were a few winners. Let get into it. "Never Let Me Go"- Kazuo Ishiguro Hailsham may seem like an ordinary English boarding school on the outside but not everything is as normal as we'd like to believe. We follow Kathy as she grows from a schoolgirl to a young woman as she navigates her world as a future donor. Because if you're at Hailsham, that means eventually you'll have to donate your vital organs. This is just a fact. But is it one that Kathy and her friends, Ruth and Tommy, can accept? If you're looking for a science fiction novel depicting a world where children are farmed into adults for the purpose of harvesting their organs, this is not for you. Because this book doesn't touch on any of that. This is more of

The Book Bit: February 2022 Ed.

I can honestly say that I am over this weird Midwestern winter weather. We've had three cold snaps within thirty days! And every time we have one I get a cold, the ones with lots of sinus pressure and headaches. So... it's been fun and I'm really really ready for some spring weather. I'm hoping March will be beautiful, but I also know I've lived in this region my entire life and have never witnessed a lovely one. I'm being optimistic. In other news, February is Black History Month! In observance, three of my four books (the fourth was chosen for my book club, so not much wiggle room there) were written by black authors. And though I put a lot of thought into these titles, I've been trying to diversify my reading throughout the year and not just in February. You may have noticed I've been reading more and more books by poc and bipoc authors as well as books that represent the lgbtq+ community. I greatly encourage you to also diversify your bookshelf, ther
