The Book Bit: August 2019 Ed.

Hey book lovers, did everyone get their kids back to school? Or maybe you're the one going back to school this semester? Or maybe nobody is going back to school, but at least your favorite hangout is kid free during school hours. Whichever, whatever, school's back in session. I always have tons of nostalgia for back to school. I come from a family of teachers and back to school, for me, always meant days in the teacher's work room helping press letters for bulletin boards, shopping for classroom decorations, and spending hours in the library working with the laminator (this was a coveted job my sister and I used to play rock, paper, scissors for; if you don't know what one is, I'm sorry. You're childhood was deprived.) Back to school also, usually, meant I suddenly didn't have as much time for books anymore. After two months of unlimited time I was now stuck with weekend and speed reading until lights out. I'm happy to say that I no longer have such restrictions, and I'm here to remind you not to give up on your reading even though school has started back up. Embrace the chaos and remember to take time for yourself.

Alright. Let's get down to business.

"Meddling Kids"- Edgar Cantero

Can I just tell you how high my expectations were for this book? It has a badass cover, has great reviews, and is advertised as Scooby-Doo for adults. The bar was really high. And it delivered. Right off the bat, I knew this book was going to be special. The writing style is very unique and I fell in love immediately. This is a book I will be talking about for awhile and beg my friends to read it, because it's that good. It's loaded with phenomenal characters, drama, horror, mystery, and good old fashioned clue chasing. We team up with Andy, Kerri, Nate, Peter, (well... Peter's dead, but every good mystery book needs a live-in ghost) and Kerri's trusty dog Tim (yes, there's a dog and Cantero's written him like a genius). When the kids solved their last mystery in 1977, they went their separate ways. Jump to 1990, they're back on the scene of that fateful case, determined to solve it the right way. This time, they know it's not a man in a mask, but will they survive the monsters from their past? I'm telling you, go get this book pronto. The characters are so relatable and the writing is such a breath of fresh air. It's like nothing you've ever read before, trust me. Fans of Stranger Things and Umbrella Academy need to read this book.

"Sawkill Girls"- Claire Legrand

It was a month of wonderful reads, guys. This book was also a winner. Don't let the YA label throw you, this is enjoyable for adults as well. Sawkill Rock is an island reserved for the beauties of the world, full of picturesque landscapes, thorough bred horses, and old wives tales. The legend of the monster that snatches girls in the forest is a tale every kid in Sawkill knows, but it's just local legend, right? Until girls start missing left and right, with no trace of where they went, except that they were last seen with or around Valerie; only the most beautiful and revered teenager on the island. Marion is new to the island, but has seen her fair share of tragedy. She finds herself bound to the island in strong force with the need to find answers. Zoey, who questions everything about Valerie and her family, begins having unexplained power surges and joins in with Marion to find answers. Will the two girls be enough to find the monster and save Sawkill? Or will the three girls have to work through their differences and join forces? This book has such an interesting storyline and the characters are more than just their lives on Sawkill Rock. Snatch this book up for a spooky read, but make sure you leave the lights on. Trust me, you won't be walking through a forest on your own for awhile after this one.

That's all I read this month, but wow! Two incredible books. I always love telling people about books that I really enjoyed, don't you? Do you have a suggestion for me? I'd love to know what you read over the summer. Drop me a comment, maybe we read the same book! Stayed tuned for next months reads. Happy back to school and happy reading!

The Book BIt: May 2019 Ed.

Hey all! I hope summer is in full swing for everyone. We had a particularly long school year due to all the snow days we accrued. Luckily the weather is finally turning and we're getting more and more warm days. Unfortunately, we're also getting colossal amounts of rain. Like, too much. Is anyone else just wanting some nice summer days where the pool is an actual option? I'm sure I'll regret saying that in another month. Anyway, I managed to put away two very good books this month. We have a new addition to our family, a baby boy, who joined us on May 13. So, I've been a little preoccupied this month, but I still managed to get some reading done. It's a nice little escape from my chaotic reality. Let's get started. "A Wrinkle in Time"- Madeleine L'Engle This was the book club selection this month and I could not have been more thrilled. Talk about a blast from the past! My mother used to check out this book on audio tape (yes, cassettes!) f...

The Book Bit: November 2020 Ed.

I hope everyone had an excellent Thanksgiving, however you chose to spend it. This was the first time in six years that we didn't travel and see family for Thanksgiving. It was hard, and I miss them very much, but it was also a bit of a relief not to travel and be away from home. Plus it gave me more time to read! What have you been reading this month? Anything good? Let's get started.   "Dead To The World"- Charlaine Harris This is book four in the Sookie Stackhouse series. To see my review for book one, you can find that here . Sookie may be able to read minds and keep her business to herself, but when she drives home one night and sees a naked man running along her road, she has to stop. There's only so much business you can mind yourself. The problem is, this isn't just any man. It's a man she knows. Eric, the vampire that owns a nightclub and good friends with her (now) ex. To her surprise, when she stops it becomes apparent that Eric has no memory. A...

The Book Bit: January 2022 Ed.

Happy New Year to every one of my readers. We've had a wild start to the new year and it doesn't show any signs of slowing down. But as unpredictable as January has been, the constants have been my TBR, always watching, always waiting, and ready for reading. Did you read anything amazing in January? Let's dive into what I read this month. "Definitely Dead" by Charlaine Harris This is the sixth book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. When Sookie's cousin dies in Louisiana under abnormal circumstances, she makes a trip to claim her apartment. But between the vampire queen, her new shape shifting beau, and past discretions following her, the trip is anything but average. Follow Sookie through a twisted maze of unlikely situations to unravel the truth of what happened to her cousin. These books continue to be far fetched and often over pumped with unimportant details. But they are easy to read and somewhat enjoyable as long as you don't mind the main character t...
