The Book Bit: February 2023 Ed.

Welcome back! Did you have a lovely February? Mine just flew by! I know it's the shortest month, but I really felt it this year. Did you read any romance novels for Valentine's Day or pick up any books for Black History Month? I'm not much for the heart's holiday, so I didn't add it into my lineup, but I definitely try to diversify my bookshelf all year round and made sure to tuck in a book by one of my favorite BIPOC authors this month. OK, let's actually talk about what I read!

"The Christmas Murder Game" by Alexandra Benedict

Every year at Endgame House there's the annual Christmas Game. And though Lily is by far the best at it, she's not participated in many years since her mother passed away in that very house. But when she receives a letter from her aunt telling her the secrets around her mothers death will be revealed at the Christmas Game, Lily can't help but be drawn in. Throw in the fact that the winner gets Endgame House, everyone in the Armitage family comes together once again to play. Once the game is afoot and a snow storm boards them to the grounds, Lily realizes not everyone is playing fair and the game may be deadlier than anyone could have predicted.

So, a bit of a story comes with me and this book. I wanted it for my December lineup and put it on hold and it didn't come through until this month! Everyone's been wanting to read it and I had to wait my turn to finally get it. Was this book good? Yes! And it was a lot of fun for the reader! Not only was this a murder mystery style book where we were putting pieces together along with the characters at Endgame House, Benedict hid other clues in the book specifically for the reader to find. It was fun to have that little wall break with the author and try and figure out the special clues. Now, the story line was a lot of fun, but the pace was really slow at the beginning. By halfway through we were only on Day 3 (of 12!) at Endgame House. The second half was faster paced, but I feel like the ending was all thrown together. As if the author knew it was getting too long, at some point. At the end of the day, the twist was really good, the book was fun, and I enjoyed it.

"Eversion" by Alastair Reynolds

In the 1800s, a sailing ship crashes in the far reaches of Norway. In the 1900s, a zeppelin travels into a deep ice canyon in Antarctica. Deep in the future, a space ship investigates the moon of a far away planet. And on each expedition, something goes horribly wrong. And the person present in every one of these incidents? Doctor Silas Coade. And when Silas realizes he's been here before, seen all this before, it's up to him to figure out why and how.

OK, I literally refuse to say any more about this book because I don't want to ruin any of it! Wow! This book really blew me away! I had no idea what I was getting into when I picked up this book and I was definitely hesitant after I started (Old English is not my favorite as a reader), but it ended up being so much bigger than I ever could've imagined. Reynolds put on a beautiful performance with this book! And the very last thing I expected was to be sobbing by the end of a science fiction novel! I loved this book, I was really blown away. And considering science fiction isn't one of my favorite genres, that's saying something! Seriously, check this one out, you won't regret it.

"The Perfect Find" by Tia Williams

Jenna Jones is in her forties and starting her fashion career over. Considering she used to be a household name in fashion, considered a founding member of elite fashion magazines, she's fallen hard into a low level blog writing job for her arch nemesis. She's surrounded by kids half her age and doesn't understand app usage or ever sent a Tweet. To say she's in over her head is an understatement. But when she meets a young man at a party, she tosses aside her usual careful facade to have a little fun. And when that fun finds its way into her workspace, will she be able to stay professional or risk her career recovery on a twenty-something man that's beyond off limits.

I love Tia Williams and this just made me love her even more! This story was so heart-wrenchingly beautiful and is all about love across timelines. Now, I did have some issues, especially with the ending, but overall this was a great little age gap romance. And it was a little spicy too! There were some really great moments in this book as Jenna goes from lost to found and everything in between. It was magical.

That's all I have for today! I got some good reading done this month and enjoyed all of my books. Did you read something you loved in February? Do you have any recommendations for me? Leave me a comment! If you'd like to keep up with me on a weekly basis, feel free to check out my YouTube channel. I'll see you all next time, happy reading!

The Book Bit: March 2020 Ed.

What a month this has been, am I right? I hope everyone is staying safe and being cautious, but I mostly hope that all of you are in excellent health. For those of us stuck at home until further notice, it can mean tons of time for extra reading! Well, my kids cut in on my reading time frequently, but I still managed to read three excellent books this month. "Lone Wolf"- Jodi Picoult You all know how much I love Jodi Picoult, so whenever I find myself in a slump I look into her collection and find one I haven't read. It'll be a sad day when I finally manage to read all of them. Do you guys have a go-to author? This book was nothing short of heart-wrenching, loving, beautiful, and tragic.  Luke Warren has spent his life with the wolves. He runs a sanctuary, is a member of the pack, and even spent an entire year in the wild living within a wolf pack. His extended relationship with his pack led to familial disaster. His wife divorced him and his son moved to Thail...

The Book Bit: April 2016 ed.

April.  Wow, wow, April.  It came and went so quickly and my schedule looked like a mad man came in and scribbled all over it.  We were busy .  So busy in fact that I only got to read two books this past month!  Two!  Oh, the travesty!   But, in all fairness, did you see the size of the Kostova book?!  It's huge!  It should count for two reads due to the sheer size of it.   April's choices were rather odd, but humorously in the same genre: romance!  Oh, how I love me a good romance.  "Snow Melts in Spring" was actually written by a relative (well... sort of a relative.  By marriage.  Or something.) and given to me by my great Aunt.  The Kostova book was a gift from another book worm friend of mine which she found at the greatest little discount bookshop in the area.  Seriously, they let you have a running tab; goodbye grocery money!   Needless to say, it was odd they fell in the same genr...

The Book Bit: March 2018 Ed.

I don't know about you guys, but the weather this month has been nothing short of depressing. And cold. Growing up in Oklahoma, I figured I had ample experience with weather roulette, but Nebraska (did I mention we moved to Nebraska?!) has a whole other thing going on. The weather here is bananas. It's cold, rainy, snowing, windy, then maybe it will be sunny, for like, an hour. Possibly. I don't feel like I'm asking for much over here! I just want to take the kids to the park (they are driving me nuts!) or be able to sit on the front porch and read a book, you know, regular things one could do in the SPRINGTIME! *deep breath* Moving on. This month has been crazy busy for us because moving never takes just a few days of your time, but I put away two exceptional books. Both of which are the first books of their series. I know! As if I don't already have at least ten series going right now, but I'm a sucker for them. And, in my defense, one of them was a book clu...
